Born in Nagaoka, Niigata, Ryo Shimizu began programming at age 6. After entering Microsoft as an advanced level engineer at age 21, he joined Dwango in 1999. He went on to found and serve as CEO of the UEI Corporation in 2003. In 2005 Japan’s Information-technology Promotion Agency certified him as a “Genius Programmer.” In recent years he has focused on development of AI using deep learning, culminating in the founding of his current venture, GHELIA. His many books include “Understanding AI” (KADOKAWA). He serves as a researcher at the University of Tokyo Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology.
